Definition

What is decoding?

Decoding refers to the ability to see a written word and say it aloud. In phonics instruction when children are learning to read, they practice taking words apart and putting them back together in a process called decoding and encoding.

The more adept kids become at decoding letter-sound combinations, the better they are at reading, spelling, and writing.

RESEARCH SAYS

Read our report on the Science of Reading (coming soon!). Research-based reading instruction must incorporate the 5 pillars of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This report provides an easy to understand overview on phonics and phonemic awareness, why it’s important and how it’s used in the classroom.
