What are digraphs and trigraphs?

Graphemes can be made up of more than one letter. A digraph is a two-letter grapheme. This means a digraph is a combination of two letters representing one sound. A trigraph is a 3-letter grapheme. This means a trigraph is a combination of three letters representing one sound. The word ‘hop’ has 3 graphemes or letters ‘h-o-p’. The word ‘shop’ also has 3 graphemes. More specifically, it has 2 graphemes and a digraph.

What's an example of a grapheme versus a digraph?

"shop" has 3 graphemes: sh-o-p

the letters "sh" form a digraph

the letters "o" and "p" are graphemes
