Definition

Reading comprehension is understanding the meaning of a text. It is the reason why we read. We read to understand what we can learn from a text.

How can you improve reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension draws upon all the building blocks of reading, especially fluency and vocabulary, to put words together and use prior knowledge to bring meaning to the text. In this sense, it not only relies on reading skills but also upon thinking and reasoning skills. When a reader is actively engaged with a text, they are asking and answering questions about the story and summarizing what they have read. Like vocabulary, reading comprehension skills develop and improve over time through instruction and practice.

Reading comprehension is one of five scientifically-based building blocks of reading instruction. The others are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and vocabulary.

Reading aloud with children is one way to improve reading comprehension. Here is a link to our blog on Reading Aloud  with Your Child (coming soon!) and why it helps children develop better reading skills and a love of reading.

Read our report on the Science of Reading (coming soon!). This report provides an easy to understand overview on phonics and phonemic awareness, why it’s important and how it’s used in the classroom.
