Definition

What is segmenting?

Segmenting is the process of breaking a word down into its constituent sounds or phonemes. Segmenting is one of the fundamental skills involved in learning to read and helps children master blending and spelling. Some people refer to segmenting as “chopping up the word”.

In order to segment successfully, children need to be comfortable with the sounds that the letters of the alphabet make.
