Overview

A consonant blend is when two consonants that make a different sound go together in a word. You say each consonant quickly so their sounds blend together.

Download our Race track blends activity below.

These activities introduce consonant blends and endings forming a word. Cut out the race track pieces. Each piece has a consonant blend and an ending. The consonant blend is blue. The ending is green. Piece together the puzzle to build a race track and reveal the hidden words. These activities have also been designed for handwriting practice.

Common Core alignment:

Phonics is the method that helps children build systematic connections between letters and sounds. Phonics has a better impact on children’s reading ability than any other type of reading program. It has also been shown to improve spelling, particularly among kindergarteners and first graders.

To find out more, read our Deep Dive into Phonics report. This report provides an easy-to-understand overview of phonics and phonemic awareness - why they are important and how they are taught in the classroom - and explains all the relevant terminology.
