Vowels can make short and long sounds. Vowels usually make a short sound when they appear directly before a consonant, but there are some exceptions to this rule.

Print out the vowel chart or display it on a screen for phonics practice. Read each word aloud and repeat the vowel sound in each word several times together. Can you think of any other long vowel words? Can you think of any other short vowel words?

Common Core Alignment:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.B Associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.
